Shameful decision
Yesterday at the Tirana Court, Judge Kolaku reads the decision he handed down against Bode
ON PAGE 2
The Tirana Court has sidelined the highest leaders of Albanian politics. Yesterday’s decision against the opposition shames Albanian justice and our country before the entire international public opinion. The four-month suspended sentence for Mr. Bode, chairman of the parliamentary group of the PDSH, is the most absurd and degrading ruling for the profession of judge and for the entire Albanian justice system. The mafia-like and political state established in Albania has yesterday given an ugly proof that, through its decisions, it has replaced law with force, democracy with the rule of the minority, and freedom with fear. The reason for this unprecedented decision was the organization of peaceful and civic protests on 20 August 1998. Yesterday’s decision therefore punishes protest and the opposition, establishes inequality in the political process and bans it by force.
There is no greater cynicism than sentencing the organizers of protests against hunger and state crime, while the organizers of the violent and criminal rallies of 14 September are left free. This means that the government, with this decision, legitimizes armed revolts for power and punishes the opposition’s civic and peaceful protests. Such a decision also shames the state police itself, which yesterday in the courtroom had brought hundreds of special forces and heavily armed police, as if they had captured some criminal gang and not the leaders of the parliamentary opposition. This decision shows that the Albanian judiciary has lost all independence and dignity and has turned into a blind tool of executive power. Yesterday’s sentence is an unacceptable act and harmful to the political climate in the country and to Albania’s image.
